DAV Debating

On Thursday 18th March, students from Year 9 and 10 Debating and Public Speaking classes participated in the DAV debating competition run by the Debating Association of Victoria, under the guidance of Ms Kira and Ms Anna.

This competition was conducted in our school library via Zoom.

Students were able to use the knowledge and skills studied in their Debating and Public Speaking elective as they competed against other schools to deliver their points of view.

Effective debating requires quick thinking, fluent presentation and excellent teamwork. The ability to communicate confidently and articulately with an audience is a valuable skill that is transferable to other subject areas and everyday life. Students also had to rebut the opposing team’s arguments, meaning they had to anticipate their rebuttals as well as think on the spot.

We had two teams compete at each year level, who were supported by fellow debating students and their friends:

Year 9

Year 10

Team 1 - Asiya Dirie, Aisha Abdul Ahi, Rumaysa Salman

Team 1 - Hanan Amin, Zahraa Al Mosawe, Lina Benserai

Team 2 - Sana Raja, Rawa Al-Asadi, Katie Lau

Team 2 - Kadijah Foggi, Habiba Ghatwari, Sumaya Samatar

Sirius College Eastmeadows teams were successful in two out of the four debates, and won three best speaker awards. Congratulations to Team 2 from Year 9 and Team 1 from Year 10 on their wins, and congratulations to Rumaysa Salman (Year 9), Rawa Al-Asadi (Year 9) and Lina Benserai (Year 10) on being selected as the best speaker in their debates.

Each team was given team-specific feedback, as well as individual feedback by experienced DAV adjudicators which will allow students to further develop and practise their debating skills.

This was a fantastic start to our debating competition, and we look forward to the next round!

Kind Regards,
Mrs Kiralee Cauchi
